VMWARE MIGRATION
VMware Exit and Migration Services: Proxmox, KVM, OpenStack and Cloud
Since Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware, many organisations have seen renewal quotes rise several times over, bundled licensing they do not need, and per-core minimums that punish smaller clusters. If your vSphere renewal is approaching, the question is no longer whether to evaluate alternatives, but how to move without disrupting production.
VIPoint Solutions has been running and migrating virtualised infrastructure for over a decade. We plan and execute VMware migrations to Proxmox VE, KVM, OpenStack, Hyper-V or public cloud, and we can manage the new platform for you afterwards.
How a VMware migration with VIPoint works
1. Assessment and TCO comparison: inventory of VMs, storage, networking and dependencies; licensing review; and a side-by-side cost model for staying on VMware versus Proxmox, KVM, OpenStack or cloud.
2. Target platform design: cluster sizing, shared storage (Ceph, ZFS, NFS or SAN), networking and VLAN mapping, high availability and backup design on the new platform.
3. Pilot migration: a small group of non-critical VMs is converted and validated first so your team can see real performance and operations before committing.
4. Wave-based migration: VMs are converted (VMDK to QCOW2/RAW, driver and agent changes, IP preservation) in planned waves with rollback points and agreed maintenance windows.
5. Handover or managed operations: documentation, training for your team, or ongoing 24/7 management of the new environment by VIPoint.
Why Proxmox and KVM are attractive right now
Open-source, no per-core licensing, mature live migration and HA, built-in backup, and a large ecosystem. For larger estates, OpenStack provides multi-tenant cloud features; for variable workloads, AWS or Azure may be the better home. We recommend based on your workloads, not on a vendor relationship.
How long does a VMware to Proxmox migration take?
A typical 10 to 40 host environment takes 6 to 12 weeks from assessment to final cut-over, depending on storage design and application dependencies. Larger or more complex estates are phased.
Will there be downtime?
Each VM needs a short cut-over window for conversion and final sync, usually minutes to under an hour. We schedule these in agreed maintenance windows and keep rollback available.
Do you migrate to public cloud as well?
Yes. If a lift-and-shift to AWS, Azure or Google Cloud makes more sense for some workloads, we handle that too, including right-sizing to control cost.
Can you manage the new platform after migration?
Yes. Most clients move onto a managed virtual server plan where we handle monitoring, patching, backups and support 24/7.
CUT LICENSING COST
Replace per-core VMware subscriptions with open-source Proxmox, KVM or OpenStack and keep the savings.
ZERO-SURPRISE PLANNING
Full inventory, dependency mapping and a pilot wave before any production workload moves.
MINIMAL DOWNTIME
Wave-based cut-overs in agreed windows with tested rollback at every step.
MANAGED AFTERWARDS
Optional 24/7 management of the new platform so your team never has to become experts overnight.
